How to Fix Pulsation in the Heater Hose in the 2005 Toyota Prius
Despite its reputation for durability and reliability, the 2005 Toyota Prius can occasionally suffer from a less common problem of a pulsation in the heater hose. While not exceedingly common, it can cause heat to be distributed sporadically or not at all. This guide will help you diagnose and repair the problem.
Tools Needed
- Jack Stands
- Flathead Screwdriver
- Pliers
- Replacement Heater Hose
- Funnel
- Container for Coolant
- Radiator Coolant
- Heat-resistant Gloves
Diagnostic Steps
- Start the car and let it idle until it reaches its typical running temperature.
- Turn on the heat. If there's pulsation in the heater hose, the heat output will be sporadic or non-existent.
Replacement Steps
- Ensure the car is off and cooled down. You don't want to get scalded by hot coolant.
- Elevate the car using jack stands for better access to the heater hose.
- Place a container under the heater hose to catch any coolant that falls out.
- Use pliers to remove the hose clamps at each end of the heater hose.
- Remove the hose. You may need to use the flathead screwdriver to break the seal if the hose is stuck.
- Once the hose has been removed, flush through the connection points with some of the new coolant to ensure a clean connection for the replacement hose.
- Install the new hose by pushing it onto the connection points and securing it with the hose clamps.
- Lower the car and refill the coolant using a funnel.
- Start the car and allow it to idle, checking for leaks around the new heater hose.
Warning
Always wear heat-resistant gloves when working with the radiator system. Even when cooled down, radiator parts can remain hot and can also conduct electricity.
Tips
Always purchase a high-quality heater hose to replace the old one. Low quality parts may not last as long and may cause future issues.
